The domain of the foprop pattern language is the practices of activists in making a living economy. Every pattern describes some kind of practice, or aspect of practice, understood (from previous practice) to be significant in skilful organising of present and future practice.

We picture practices as having various degrees of reach and accessibility, described in terms of two **zones of reach**.

Close-up patterns - This is one of two zones of reach.

Long reach patterns - This is one of two zones of reach.

We also picture any practice as comprising stuff that may be engaged in one of three landscapes. All practice is conducted simultaneously in all three landscapes - they are parctically inseparable. But it's possible - and we argue it's necessary for skilful engagement - to engage differently with the stuff of each landscape.

Landscapes - Here we describe three kinds of landscape that may be engaged with within a zone of reach, and indeed, in practice generally.

The zones of reach and the landscapes are used together, to generate a 'weave' of regions, within which patterns (or families of patterns) may be located. This weave is the essential architecture of the pattern language. A weave of zones and landscapes
